Who was Raja Ram Mohan Roy, today’s google doodle?
Raja Ram Mohan Roy is one of the many Bengali social reformer who modernised the Bengal province. He is referred to as Wikipedia by a social worker but actually he is the creator of modern India. If he were not there India still wold have been painstaken with practices like Sati Daha, polygamy, illiteracy, infanticide, caste system andchild marriage (though Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar is creditted with it, but he himself said he was inspired by Ram Mohan; according to me its a dual venture).
Why was he great?
He belonged to a Brahmin (priest) family who are orthodox enough not to oppose the evil customs of olden days. He was a scholar of more than 16 languages like Sanskrit, Hindi, Bengali, Urdu, Arabic, English, German, Feanch and many other European languages.Ram Mohan was bold enough to speak up against idol worship at his home which made his father Ram Kanta drive his son from his home at the age of 13. At that tender age he found himself a good job at the English East India Company. But after a few years of settled life, he went on to travel India (For which Rabindranath Tagore called him Indian Traveller). He found the backward condition of India. He started the Brahmo Samaj movement in India, this was a society without unwanted rituals.
HE SPOKE UP FOR WOMEN RIGHTS WHEN NO ONE EVEN THOUGHT OF IT FAR WIDE. HE GAVE WOMEN THEIR DUE SHARE OF RESPECT. HE STOOD UP ALONE THAT’S WHY HE IS GREAT.
SALUTE TO THIS PIONEER ON HIS BIRTHDAY.
